Climate change is a very important problem, not only in America but worldwide. Climate change is defined as “any significant change in the measures of climate lasting for an extended period of time. In other words, climate change includes major changes in temperature, precipitation, or wind patterns, among other effects, that occur over several decades or longer,” according to the EPA. This shift in our climate has costly consequences.
The Greenhouse Effect & Global Warming
Greenhouse gases like that of carbon dioxide, methane and water vapor absorb the heat from the sun, slowing the process of the heat deduction acting as a blanket around the earth. This is essential on earth, but too much of it can cause problems for our climate. This is called the Greenhouse Effect, and is a core contributor to climate change. Global warming is big aspect of climate change. “Global warming refers to the recent and ongoing rise in global average temperature near Earth’s surface. It is caused mostly by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Global warming is causing climate patterns to change. However, global warming itself represents only one aspect of climate change,” according to the EPA. The increase in global temperature is sporadic and alarming.
Northern Atlantic hurricanes will accelerate with greater intensity and frequency.Category 4 and 5 hurricanes have already been increasing since the early 1980’s as the earth gets warmer this activity will become more frequent. Global sea levels has risen about 8 inches since 1800 and are predicted to rise another 1 to 4 feet by 2100. This will occur because the added water from from melting land ice and the expansion of seawater as it warms up. The upcoming decades ahead are expected to include “storm surges and high tides could combine with sea level rise and land subsidence to further increase flooding in many regions.” Our oceans are crucial “carbon sinks”- emphasizing they absorb huge amounts of carbon dioxide, preventing it from reaching the upper atmosphere. But with an increase in fossil fuel emissions and greenhouse gases the oceans are absorbing a lot of CO2, making our oceans and sea’s very acidic. More droughts in the Southwest will occur and heat waves (periods of abnormally hot weather lasting days to weeks) will arise everywhere, and are predicted to become more intense and severe while cold waves are projected to have the opposite effects becoming less severe. Summer temperature will continue to rise, with soil reduction which would exacerbates heat waves in western and central America. The average U.S. precipitation has escalated since 1900 places and has promoted more floods.The effects might not have effected you directly but our planet is been poorly taken into consideration and these effects are affecting our planet that will eventually affect us.
How We Can Help
You can help our climate doing little things at home in your community to reduce greenhouse gases emission and other risk affiliated with climate change. Many of these tips can help you save money, such as walking or biking to work or school. You could also get involved with environmental programs in your community to learn about the importance of climate change and encourage others to get involved. Avoid using your car; try using public transportation as much as possible. Try renewable fuels like E85 and biodiesel. These little things can make a big difference.
